I love ladies that kick ass! I’m almost as intent on it as Quentin Tarantino and look what he’s come up with. It all started in the summer of 1993 when I was 12 years old living in a small town in Lancashire and hanging out on a constant basis with a great friend with blonde curls and a fantastic sense of the ridiculous. Together we would make up the silliest funniest characters such as rainbow coloured bickering carrots and we called ourselves ‘longheads’ due to the feeling that we both had foreheads that are too big.
Somehow we got our hands on a video of the film Terminator 2 which we quickly became utterly obsessed with. We would watch it a few times per day until we could literally speak back the lines word for word and go out into the park and pretend to be terminators chasing each others asses. It was during this hazy VHS summer that I became acquainted with the character Sarah Connor who I found to be just the most fascinating person I’d ever seen in a film.
She was strong, very strong! Muscles and everything. She spoke in husky, determined tones, she fought to protect her child, to protect the entire future of Mankind, she could do anything, literally anything. I was hooked. Not only did she wear cool military outfits she also was emotionally complex and loving and would stop at nothing. Since then I’ve always had a keen eye for female action heroes – ones that are physically, emotionally and mentally strong – but complex, they have to be complex – and always with a purpose and always extremely competent. Here a few of my favorites. Who are yours?
